It depends on your circumstances and which one saves the most money year over year. Is it better to claim miles or use the actual expense method? ![]() Therefore, claiming actual expenses and the mileage rate essentially takes the same deduction twice. The mileage allowance is simply the IRS letting you use a flat mileage rate to determine what you can claim. Nor can you claim depreciation and then take miles on top of that. You can not claim gas or maintenance if you use the standard mileage method. The thing to remember is that it's one or the other. Multiply that percentage by the total cost to get your deductible amount. Once you've determined your total cost of driving, you must calculate what percentage of your miles were for business. We go into more miles about using the actual expense method here. On the one hand, you can track how many miles you drove for your deliveries and claim the standard mileage rate.Īlternatively, you can add up all the costs of driving, which the IRS includes: Those with home offices can write off $5 per square foot rather than adding up all the housing costs and calculating a percentage of the space.Īnd you can claim the standard mileage rate of 62.5 cents per mile (2nd half of 2022) instead of adding up all the various expenses. They let you claim a standard tax deduction as opposed to itemizing. The IRS offers some flat rate options in different areas to simplify filing taxes. Understanding mileage versus actual expenses. Either way, claiming vehicle expenses is often a way to significantly reduce your tax burden. The IRS lets you decide whether to calculate the actual cost of driving or claim a flat rate per mile. Even though it feels like you made a thousand dollars in a week, the cost of driving takes a big bite out of those earnings. Driving a mile or more for every dollar earned is not uncommon. It becomes even more significant for gig workers in rideshare and delivery. When you add everything up, it costs a lot. There's a reason the IRS lets you write off such a significant amount per mile (62.5 cents in the second half of 2022). In that way, it acts like a credit card on wheels. Either when you replace things like the tires or timing belt or receive less when you sell your car. Those are expenses that will have to be paid at some time. Each mile gets you closer to big-ticket repair/replacement items. Every mile adds an expense that is paid at a later date. It costs more to drive your personal vehicle than just gas and oil changes. Most of us delivering for delivery services like Instacart, Doordash, Roadie, Waitr, and others put a lot of miles on our cars. Why writing off car expenses is a big deal for delivery drivers You should find a tax professional who can guide you if you need specific advice for your tax situation. The purpose is to educate and inform, helping independent contractors understand how taxes work for them and explaining the related concepts. We'll link to other articles where appropriate, and at the end, we have a list of all articles in the series. For that reason, this is part of a more comprehensive series on gig worker taxes. ![]() It's impossible to cover it all and do it well in one article. ![]() There are a lot of aspects related to taxes for delivery drivers in the gig economy. Therefore, many examples will be related to food delivery companies like Grubhub, Shipt, Amazon Flex, DeliverThat, and many larger companies. You should seek out a tax professional who can help you with your locality and the related taxes.ĮntreCourier is mainly about the business side of delivery work in the gig economy. Because there are so many state and local governments, we don't dive into local or state taxes. Other countries have their own tax laws that may or may not be similar. This article is about how the car expense deduction works in the United States. The most important rule for claiming auto expenses. ![]() Understanding mileage versus actual expenses. Why claiming your car is such a significant write-off.We'll talk about how it works to claim your car as an expense item on your independent contractor taxes. The loss of value is known as depreciation. That loss of value is a deductible expense (unless it's like this thing and it's already lost all its value). Reddit user u/eventhorizon07 posts about their IHOP experience. The worst nightmare for some customers is to find the perfect meal on a menu, but it has an obnoxious name that you have to say out loud to the waitress and anyone else close by. These decisions are made by chain restaurants like IHOP ’s “Rooty Tooty Fresh N’ Fruity” pancakes and small businesses like Huntington’s Truckin’ Cheesy who named their peanut butter and jelly sandwich (on Texas Toast or glazed Donut) a “Sticky Icky.” Tudors seemed to pull of this fast food trend in a different way, almost making the customers a part of a fan base. So, what was I missing? How long would the wait be? Is the food actually fast? Was the price worth it compared to other fast-food franchises that offer breakfast sandwiches? Is it the biscuits-or does the experience have anything to do with it? I have seen the small and mysterious Tudor’s biscuit World on 20 th St. in Huntington plenty of times. If the drive-thru speakers that blast all the way through the CVS parking lot across the street did not intrigue you, the strong aroma of breakfast would. Natchez, Mississippi has the title of the Biscuit Capitol of the World, but that doesn’t mean West Virginians do not love their biscuits at Tudor’s Biscuit World any less. Bill and Mae Tudor were the creators of the franchise and opened the first Tudors in 1980 on Washington Street in Charleston, West Virginia. The West Virginia-based restaurant is not just limited to the state but has opened in southern Ohio (one being only 30 minutes from my home), eastern Kentucky, and one in Panama City, Florida. ![]() In 2021, West Virginia was listed as the state with the second highest (39.70%) obesity rate-right under Mississippi (40.80%). When I traveled this summer to Mississippi for the first time, there was no denying that the state has some good food, but I didn’t realize that the two states were so similar-that is, with a strong love for biscuits. ![]() Welcome to the Rest of the West (Virginia), a series where Xena Bunton explores the foods, places and things that hold importance to the state of West Virginia. ![]() ![]() Consequently, Javan rhinos are the least-studied of all rhinoceros species. Researchers instead rely on camera traps and fecal samples to gauge health and behavior. Scientists and conservationists rarely study the animals, directly due to their extreme rarity and the danger of interfering with such an endangered species. Very small juveniles may be preyed upon, if left unsupervised, typically by leopards, Sumatran tigers or, rarely, crocodiles. Aside from humans, whom they usually avoid, adult rhinos have no natural predators in their range. It is mostly solitary, except for courtship and rearing offspring, though groups may occasionally congregate near wallows and salt licks. It historically inhabited dense lowland rainforest, wet grasslands, and vast floodplains at forest-edges. The Javan rhinoceros can live around 30–45 years in the wild. Nonetheless, rural, potentially rugged park boundaries mean that law enforcement cannot be equally present in all places at all times in some areas, this lack of security still places the species at risk from poachers, disease exposure and, ultimately, loss of genetic diversity-leading to genetic “bottlenecking” (i.e., inbreeding depression). The remaining range is within one nationally- protected area, and Ujung Kulon is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Loss of habitat and massive human population growth (especially post-wartimes, such as the Vietnam War) have also contributed to its decline and hindered the species’ recovery. : 31 As the presence of colonial Dutch and other Europeans in its range increased, peaking in the 1700-1800s, trophy hunting also became a serious threat. The decline of the Javan rhinoceros is primarily attributed to poaching, for the males’ horns, which-despite merely being composed of keratin-are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine, fetching as much as US$30,000 per kg on the black market. The Javan rhinoceros population in Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park was declared locally extinct in 2011. ![]() It is among the rarest large mammals on the planet Earth, : 21 with a population of approximately 74 rhinos within Ujung Kulon National Park, at the far western tip of Java, Indonesia. Today, it is the rarest of all rhinoceros, and among the rarest of all living animal species, with only one currently known wild population, and no individuals successfully kept in captivity. Up until the mid-19th to about the early 20th century, the Javan rhinoceros had ranged beyond the islands of Java and Sumatra and onto the mainland of Southeast Asia and Indochina, northwest into East India, Bhutan, and the south of China. However, unlike the long and potentially lethal horns of the black or white rhinoceroses of Africa, the Javan species’ single, somewhat blunted horn (only present on males) is usually shorter than 25 cm (9.8 in). The heaviest specimens weigh around 2,300 kg/2.3 tonnes (2.54 short tons), similar to an African black rhinoceros. They are superficially similar to Indian one-horned rhinos, as they have plate-like, “armored” protective skin folds, but are slightly smaller in size, at just 3.1–3.2 m (10–10 ft) long and 1.4–1.7 m (4.6–5.6 ft) tall, on average. The Javan rhinoceros is one of the smallest rhinoceros species, along with the Sumatran, or “hairy”, rhinoceros. The Javan rhinoceros ( Rhinoceros sondaicus), Javan rhino, Sunda rhinoceros or lesser one-horned rhinoceros is a critically endangered member of the genus Rhinoceros, of the rhinoceros family, Rhinocerotidae, and one of the five remaining extant rhinoceros species across South Asia and Africa. ![]() So if you’re just modeling for fun, you probably won’t have too much use for a pro license, but if you’re using SketchUp to make money, you should have a pro license. ![]() I believe this is a one year license, after which you’d have to renew.Īccording to the licensing agreement of SketchUp, if you’re using SketchUp for commercial uses, you should be using a pro license. Teaching people how to use this program was the reason I eventually bought my Pro License.Īs you’ve probably seen if you’ve watched any of my videos on Styles, SketchUp comes with a number of built-in styles that allow you to change the way your models look. You can use it to add dimensions, labels, title blocks – basically anything you need to present and export plans. Layout is SketchUp’s tool for creating documentation and presentations, so things like construction plans. Probably the biggest reason that people purchase the Pro Version of SketchUp is for access to Layout. In addition, I believe you can export higher resolution animations with the pro version. With the pro version, you can import and export a lot more kinds of files, but the most important is the ability to import and export DWG, or AutoCad Files. SketchUp was able to find a new provider, but that new provider charged licensing fees, so now the satellite and terrain functions are features only found in SketchUp Pro.Īnother defining feature of the SketchUp Pro version is its ability to import and export different kinds of files. ![]() One new change is that Google recently ended access to their map data by SketchUp, meaning that the free geolocation features lost their data source. I was in no way ever limited in my ability to create any kind of model by using a Make license. I want to say something to put all of this in perspective, because I get a LOT of questions about SketchUp pro – I created the first 215 videos on my YouTube channel with a SketchUp Make license before I finally saved up enough to go out and purchase a Pro license, and the reason I bought a Pro License was specifically so that I could teach people how to use Layout for architecture. I’m not 100% clear on this one, but I believe the dynamic component editing options may only be available in SketchUp Pro as well. ![]() In addition, it comes with a set of advanced camera tools which are very useful when working with things like set design or complicated camera angles. There are a few exceptions – SketchUp pro contains Solid Tools – a set of tools designed for working with solid objects that is useful for things like 3D printing. SketchUp Make (the free version) contains most of the modeling tools and capabilities of SketchUp pro. So now that we know what it costs, and what some of the options are, let’s talk about capabilities and what you’re getting for your money. So to put that in perspective, a one time $695 payment is actually a pretty good deal for a software with this level of capability. A full AutoCAD license is $1470/year, and an AutoCAD LT license is $380/year. SketchUp comes in 2 versions – SketchUp Make, which is free, and SketchUp Pro, which at the creation of this video, costs $695.įirst of all, I want to put something out there, because there seems to be some confusion – this is a single payment of $695 (again, at the time of this video’s creation).Ī license for Autodesk Revit, another building design program, is (at the moment) $2,000/year! That’s a yearly recurring cost. SketchUp Pro Comparison – The SketchUp Essentials #47 ![]() But from what I read from devs or forums, only creatures respawn from eggs.
